Lightning Electric Field Sensor - Field Mill
Pictured is an instrument called a Field Mill. This atmospheric monitoring device is designed to measure the strength of electric fields between the ground and the upper layers of the atmosphere, typically at cloud heights.
Lightning is the product of the difference in the potential voltage between the ground and the clouds, and if there is not enough difference in the potential voltages, then there can be no lightning in the area.
A typical electric field on a calm day would be around no more than 50 to 80 v/m. However for lightning to occur you would need to see this potential build to around 1500v/m or higher. Therefore by monitoring this change in the electric fields, you are measuring the potential for lightning to occur in your location.
Field Mills are used in working environments where early warning is crucial, so, as to avoid injury to personnel operating in the immediate area. The consequences of a lightning strike can be catastrophic!
